Welcome to Start School Later St. Charles, IL!
Ann Russell has lived in St Charles, IL most of her life. She attended St. Charles schools and is pleased that her two children attend them now. She is dreading the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, the year her oldest starts high school.
In order for him to be in his seat in time for the 7:20am bell, he will likely need to rise before 6am - an hour that science overwhelmingly illustrates is an unhealthy hour for him to wake. Mountains of research show that adolescents need an average of 9 hours of sleep.
Unfortunately, due to a biological sleep phase delay, most adolescents cannot naturally fall asleep before 11 p.m. Arising at 6 a.m. results in a sleep deficit of roughly 2 hours a night on average. The short-term and long-term health impacts of this are astounding.
A good education is a necessity in life, and we are rightfully proud of our great schools in St. Charles. The teachers and facilities are excellent. We routinely rank near the top both state-wide and nationally. Protecting the health and safety of all of our students should be the number one priority of our school administration. We can, and should, adjust the school start times to a healthier hour.
