Start School Later Westchester County, NY!
Start School Later is thrilled to announce another chapter, Westchester County, NY. Dr. Toni Lyn Salvatore felt led to get involved with school time issues when her 9th grade son started struggling in his accelerated math class.
Always a star student in math in elementary and middle school, it was a shock to find that he was struggling to pass. What was not surprising was that he was falling asleep in class. With a 6:00am wake up call, it's no wonder her young son, along with many other students are struggling just to get through school.
Dr. Salvatore plans to meet with the Henrick Hudson School Board to discuss the health implications of early school start times. Contact her using the form on the right to join her in this effort and be sure to sign her petition too.
In addition to being a concerned parent, Dr. Salvatore is the Medical Director of the Pediatric Center of Greenwich Hospital.
So why do school districts approve of early start times when they know well enough this is harming our students. The answer I received from teachers and board members was “SPORTS!” The sports teams need to be released for practice and game participation. Although, I have my doubts that this is the only reason, it is an altogether unacceptable one! When did we in society give more importance to sports over academics? Children should be in school to learn first, play later.
