Welcome to Start School Later Truckee Tahoe, CA
Sleep is a fundamental human need and this need fluctuates as a human develops. According to most sleep experts, most adolescents need about 9 hours of sleep per night.
One of the leading causes preventing teen sleep is a two-decade old trend to start school earlier. Too-early school start times are a health concern with consequences impacting children, families, and our community. Restoring traditional school start times, to 8:30am or later for our middle and high school students as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and the Centers for Disease Control, is a practical and necessary solution with broad and immediate benefits for children of all ages. In our district, 4 out of 13 schools start before 8:00am and 6 out of 13 start before 8:30am. We invite educators, health professionals, parents, students and public officials to work together for safe, healthy communities with a growth mindset. Our district has unique geographical challenges, but we believe we can solve this issue. We must prioritize our children’s health first.
