Welcome to Start School Later Greenwich, CT!
In 2003 Wilton, CT pioneered a community led change to later school start times in a highly successful and nationally publicized move. Ironically, the Greenwich community, which is in the same intramural sports division, still has not changed it's high school's 7:30 a.m. start time, despite the widespread knowledge about early schedules working against teen body clocks.
Valerie Erde, a concerned parent of two, has been researching and writing about the issue of early school start times and felt the time was right to re-ignite previous efforts to establish healthier school starts in her community. The result was Start School Later Greenwich, CT. Valerie is also experienced as a senior management consultant in the media industry and is the Founder and Owner of Greenwich 1on1, an organization that specializes in providing individualized coaching for students in sports and music. "Wilton’s start time change was a resounding success. Teachers recognized a change in student behavior: they were more awake, had better attitudes and were overall more pleasant. Parents also reported changes in their kids’ attitudes, and became increasingly supportive as they adjusted to the new routines. Teachers who also coached at the schools were concerned before the change that they would be unable to make it to practices, but this turned out not to be a problem. Wilton High School had one of its best athletic seasons, even earning several state championships. - National Sleep Foundation (c) 2005
