Gubernatorial Candidate Mizeur Endorses Starting School Later
by Terra Ziporyn Snider
Maryland delegate Heather Mizeur (D-Takoma Park), a candidate for governor, expressed support today for healthy start times for Maryland public schools. Her endorsement came in the form of a letter to Start School Later, an Annapolis-based, nationwide grassroots advocacy organization working for later bell times. She writes:
"Our current school start times are outdated, unnecessary, and create unsafe and unproductive learning conditions for our children....Adjusting our school start times is the right approach to consider because it will improve academic performance, improve adolescent health, and save educational resources."
Her letter arrived on the heels of the unanimous passage by the Maryland Senate of SB14/HB883, legislation that requires the state to study the issue and provide guidance to local school districts on developmentally appropriate start times. The bill will be taken up by the House of Delegates for final consideration in the next day or two.
We applaud Del. Mizeur for taking a stand on safe, healthy and equitable school hours. We look forward to learning that all of Maryland’s gubernatorial candidates recognize this need as well.
