Start School Later is currently seeking a leader for the SSL Monroe County, IN chapter. If you are interested in healthy school hours and in being the SSL contact person for Monroe County, please contact us using the contact form on this page.

The Monroe County, IN chapter of Start School Later (formerly Bloomington) is working to reverse a decision made in 2011 to start secondary schools at 7:40 a.m. Our county has miles of rural roads and bus routes begin at 5:45 in the morning.

Secondary students begin school before sunrise much of the year. In the spring and fall it stays light until after 9:00 pm, so it is even more difficult for our students to get to sleep at a reasonable hour. With the added difficulty of adolescent sleep phase delay, we have a population of students trying to learn in unsafe and unhealthy conditions, and many parents and teachers feel we need to make a change.

Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) is considering making changes to the daily start times. Start School Later Bloomington is helping to facilitate communication among the parents and teachers who are concerned about the too early start for our teens, and to share research with our school board and school administrators. We want to see start times conform to the recommendations of the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

To connect with our Bloomington, IN chapter, like our Facebook page or fill out the contact form on this page.
