Welcome to Start School Later Brighton, NY!
Studies show that teenagers need as much sleep as younger children, but that their natural sleep cycles start later at night. Lack of sleep for teens leads to poorer learning, more sports injuries, decreased physical and mental health, and more car accidents. With more and more communities moving their high school start time to a later time, it is time for the Brighton Central School District (BCSD) and the Brighton community to do the same.
We surveyed 222 parents (~10% of students) in our community and identified a significant interest in changing school start times, especially that of the High School. The science, the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Medical Association, and Brighton parents should be enough to convince the BCSD administration to Start School Later for middle and high school in Brighton. Join us in working to make this important change! |
