Middle schools, high schools and career centers in the Columbus City Schools district start at 7:30 a.m. The earliest bus pickup times for students are as early as 5:45 a.m. in the morning. Obviously the actual wake-up times for these students and thousands of others in the district are even more brutal. It doesn’t have to be this way, and in the past, it wasn’t. In the 1950s and 1960s, most schools started between 8:30-9:00 a.m.
The change to extremely early wake-up times for middle and high school students across the U.S. has been very detrimental to our physical and mental health, educational achievement, and safety. Experts in sleep science recognize that these start times are especially damaging for adolescents, whose biological sleep clock resets itself during these years to require later sleep. Most disturbingly, the effects on rates of mental illness and physical disorders persist into adulthood. By allowing early start times to continue, we are making choices now that will damage our kids for the rest of their lives. The American Academy of Pediatrics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Medical Association all recommend that middle and high schools start class no earlier than 8:30 a.m. ' Please join our local chapter of Start School Later to work with the Columbus City Schools to restore reasonable start times in our local schools and across the state. |
