Welcome to Start School Later Northeast OH!
Stacy Simera, MSSA, LISW-S, SAP leads the NE Ohio chapter of Start School Later. You can contact her via the link on this page.
Most schools in NE Ohio are aware of the research, in fact Stacy has presented the research to multiple local school boards and at myriad conferences in NE Ohio and the rest of the state.
Lack of knowledge is not the issue. What motivates schools in Ohio is hearing directly from parents and professionals in the district - the people who vote, pay taxes, or treat the local sleep-deprived teens. If you would like to learn how you can start a movement in your district, contact us.
In addition: a growing concern is the need for state-level legislation to set limits on how early schools should start - to help protect child health and safety when schools drag their feet. Please consider signing and sharing a petition that asks for Ohio middle and high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m., and for elementary schools to start no earlier than 8 a.m. You can view the petition by clicking on the yellow button: "Statewide Petition."
Stacy Simera provides counseling at a private practice in Kent; teaches part-time at Case Western Reserve University; facilitates group education on depression at the Oak Clinic for Multiple Sclerosis; serves as Chair of the Sleep Committee for the Ohio Adolescent Health Partnership; conducts workshops for psychologists, counselors, social workers, and foster parents across the state; and was named 2014 State of Ohio Social Worker of the Year.
