Start School Later North Kingstown is working for safe, healthy school hours for students.
North Kingstown Senior High School is a top-performing school and consistently ranks among the best high schools in Rhode Island. Unfortunately, while some other districts nationwide have delayed bell times in the interest of student health and safety, this school has a 7:15 a.m. start time, which is in direct conflict with the sleep needs of teens—and more than an hour earlier than sleep experts recommend. An indisputable body of research shows that early morning school start times are simply bad for teenagers. With buses picking up as early as 6:20 a.m., our school system is seriously compromising our students’ ability to get a good night’s sleep. It’s time that North Kingstown schools join the nation-wide movement toward later start times for high school students. |
