Welcome to Start School Later
Montgomery County, TX!

Start School Later Montgomery County, TX is committed to protecting the health and safety of public school students by advocating for reasonable school start times and working in a positive manner within the local community.

Montgomery County is part of a large cluster of early high school start times in Texas around the Houston area. Home to nine independent school districts, where only two begin the high school day after 8:00 AM. None begin the high school day after 8:30 AM as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, the AMA, and numerous other health organizations!

  • Cleveland ISD - 715 AM, first bus pickup 5:30 AM
  • Conroe ISD - 7:16 AM
  • Magnolia ISD - 7:25 AM, first bus pickup 5:50 AM
  • Montgomery ISD - 7:20 AM, first bus pickup 5:45 AM
  • New Caney ISD - 8:15 AM
  • Richards ISD - 8:00 AM
  • Splendora ISD - 7:15 AM, first bus pickup 5:40 AM
  • Tomball ISD - 7:25 AM, first bus pickup 5:39 AM
  • Willis ISD - 7:05 AM, first bus pickup 5:20 AM

Students who rely on the bus to get to school and are unfortunate to be assigned the first bus pickup in districts starting in the 7 o'clock hour are getting about 5 hours of sleep per night. By the end of the school week, these students have a 20 hour sleep deficit.
"If changing high school start times by an hour saves one life, don't you think it's worth it?  I say yes."
- Dr. William David Brown, Dallas Children's Medical Center

The Houston area has the largest cluster of early daily high school start times in the state. As Houston ISD considers standardizing their bell schedules for the 2018-19 academic year, SSL Texas is advocating for healthy schools for middle and high schools in the district.
