Welcome to Start School Later Boston, MA!
Start School Later is thrilled to have Boston as its 11th Massachusetts town chapter. Chapter leader Deb Putnam, a parent of two BPS teenagers, sees first hand the effects of early school start times and chronic sleep deprivation on her kids and the whole family. With a public health social work background, she is also deeply committed to equity, where students from all walks of life benefit from current best practices in education and public health.
50% (16) of Boston Public High Schools (BPS) start school before 7:30am, more than one hour before the recommended start time of 8:30am. Deb and other parents from Boston Latin Academy (BLA) began meeting in 2014 to educate and organize parents, students, teachers and administrators about a later school start time. BLA’s start time is 7:20am! While the group is focused on organizing within BLA, it networks and seeks to build momentum with other BPS parents, students, teachers and administrators to build a citywide effort to change early high school start times.
