Our National Petition

Start School Later Melrose, MA is presently led by Frank Brincheiro and Ed O'Connell.  Frank and Ed and their spouses have children enrolled in both the middle and high schools in Melrose.  Frank is a doctor with a local family medical practice and Ed is president of the high school PTO.

Start School Later Melrose is committed to the premise that the middle and high school schedules should be better aligned with the biological sleep rhythms of adolescents. As recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, middle and high school start times should be 8:30a.m. or later.

At present, the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School (MVMMS) start time is 7:40a.m. and the Melrose High School (MHS) start time is 7:45a.m.  Start School Later Melrose proposes that the MVMMS start time be changed to 8:25a.m. and that the MHS start time be changed to 8:30a.m. As reflected by the Melrose Board of Health's recent vote to endorse these proposed time changes, this initiative is a matter of public health.

Start School Later Melrose has presented its proposal to the MHS and MVMMS PTOs and, following consultation with the Melrose Superintendent of Schools, will present a formal proposal to the Melrose School Committee in May/June 2015.
