Welcome to Start School Later Weston, MA!
The Start School Later Weston chapter is dedicated to improving the health and well being of our children by advocating for a later high school start time.
As our children grow, their circadian rhythms trend towards a later and later sleep time (late to bed, late to rise), resulting in a mounting sleep deficit that cannot be recovered. Research has shown a sleep deficit results in a myriad of cognitive, behavioral, and physical ailments including:
Analysis of other communities that have made the switch to later start times have shown that the burden on families, cost to the district, and disruption to athletics are not as severe as anticipated. Virtually none have made the switch back to an earlier start time. One such study showed that the number of car crashes for teen drivers from 16 to 18 years of age was significantly reduced by 70% when a school shifted start times from 7:35 AM to 8:55 AM. Help us improve our children’s sleep, and reduce the stressful burden they face in school. To contact the Weston, MA chapter please fill out the contact form on this page.
