Heather Fairfield, chapter leader, teleworks for a health and disability insurance company. She is also a mother of 2 boys, the oldest in 7th grade. Her oldest son already struggles with the middle school start time of 8:00am and the high school starts a half hour earlier.
With all the scientific research on adolescent sleep patterns, the health consequences of chronic sleep deprivation, and the American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement recommending that no school for adolescents start before 8:30am, she felt it was her parental responsibility to advocate for change. Heather is hoping to build momentum with parents, educators and administrators for healthier school start times in and around South Portland and would like to hear from other community members who want to become involved in this initiative.
