Welcome to Start School Later Greater Austin, TX!
Formerly the Austin, TX chapter, the Greater Austin chapter of Start School Later includes the growing metroplex of Round Rock, Georgetown and San Marcos. Seven Austin-area high schools start at 8:20 a.m. or later (San Marcos H.S. at 8:20 a.m., Round Rock H.S. at 9:05 a.m.). Area middle schools start around 8:30 a.m.
Eanes ISD and the neighboring school district, Lake Travis, changed their elementary school start times. The districts needed to meet the 75,600 minutes of instructional time required by the state so five minutes were added to each school day ... in the morning! In 2017-2018, elementary schools will start at 7:40 a.m. One of the schools will start as early as 7:35 a.m., which is up to 10 minutes earlier than 2016-2017.
Roundrock, TX high school students enjoy an 8:35am start time, but elementary school children are still being sent to school in pre-dawn hours and need to be in class prior to 8:00am. Not only is it unsafe, but young teachers that still have circadian sleep rhythms of teenagers must work with their young charges while fighting off their own sleep deprivation.
